Enjoy the Brazilian Brunch this Sunday at 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm and 8pm Central Time (US).

It's time for The Sounds of Brazil to look back at 2013: 17 years ago, I resolved to wrap up the year's musical highlights with an annual 'Best of Brazil' show, and here we go again!

Maria Rita Tix: Looking for a musical treat to begin the New Year? Join us at City Winery Chicago for Latin Grammy winning singer Maria Rita, February 5th & 6th. She's the talented daughter of legendary Brazilian singer Elis Regina (some say she sounds just like her!) and while most 'A List' Brazilian performers give Chicago a pass, this is a great opportunity to hear one of the best. There's even an optional 'Meet n Greet' so you can get to know her even better! Perfect for Valentine's Day, too.

Sunday's Brazilian Brunch celebrates the New Year with a Brazilian champagne toast and heartwarming Brazilian jazz. Only on Sundays at 8 & 11 am and 2, 5, 8 and 11 pm Chicago time and only on The Sounds of Brazil webstream. And read our Brazilian Burnch preview every Friday from our home page.

The Sounds of Brazil webstream! Now you can listen to a new hour at the top of the hour, every hour. And catch the beginning of our weekly show every three hours at nine, noon, 3pm, 6 pm, 9pm and midnight Central Time every day. Listen here. Mobile apps, too!

Request a song, style or artist on the Brazil Club Lounge page and you could win a CD for yourself and a friend! If I select yours, you’ll hear me play it and announce your name on the radio too. Go ahead, its fun!

Bossa Nova Breeze is the name of our new streaming radio station. The “All Bossa Nova, All The Time” station plays Classic Bossa Nova - and no talk. Just lyrics and sometimes not even that!  You’ll find the PLAY button on the Lounge page when you click here! The New Music ‘Hot List’, too!

This week’s show:

My Producer's Notes

Listen to The Sounds of Brazil every three hours beginning at 6am Central Time daily.

Our annual ‘Year In Review’ shows are always fun to listen to – and also to produce. It’s kind of like having your horse come in after a last-minute guess at the betting window: You know how it will start, but not how it will all end up.

In many ways, 2013 was a year of surprises. Sao Paulo newcomer Gisele De Santi came out of nowhere to win Brazil Club’s ‘Song of the Year’ Contest with her debut album, thanks in part to a very active fan base in Brazil and her obvious talent as a performer.

On the other side of the experience scale, nothing pleased me more than to see Bossa Nova legend Roberto Menescal honored with a Lifetime achievement award from the Latin Recording Academy. And in fact, Brazil did very well at the Latin Grammy award this year, with Roberto Carlos winning ‘Best Brazilian Song’ and also completing for the overall Latin Grammy ‘Song of the Year’. And if the winner’s list was a little too predictable for my taste, it only served to underscore a great year for Brazilian song.

Our end-of-the-year special captures the best of these from both the well-known performers to the newly-welcomed rising stars. And in keeping with our own long-held tradition, I’ll debut five new songs that’ll help you get 2014 underway in tropically smooth style.

Here in Chicago, fans stayed busy with the MOSTRA Brazilian film festival, Festa Junina and a growing number of Brazilian Independence Day parties and shows, including the return of Brazil Fest Chicago in Logan Square. And The Sounds of Brazil hosted its first-ever Brazilian Brunch at the Parrot Cage Restaurant in the South Shore Cultural Center featuring guitarist Paulinho Garcia. Look for this popular event to return again in 2014.

The Sounds of Brazil’s streaming radio had its best year ever in 2013 and we debuted two new programs: The Sunday Brazilian Brunch took to the air in late July, featuring the softer side of Brazilian song and our new channel, Bossa Nova Breeze launched its “all Bossa Nova all the time” format in October.

So all in all, 2013 shaped up to be a very good year for Brazilian music, with an emphasis on exciting new voices. And you can count on The Sounds of Brazil to create new stories for 2014.

What will we be talking about next December?  Stay tuned!

Happy New Year!

It’s a Brazilian champagne toast for The Sunday Brazilian Brunch, when we’ll settle in to the first weekend of the New Year with a heartwarming blend of Brazilian jazz when we relax and unwind for awhile this weekend. Watch for the Brazilian Brunch preview on Brazil Club’s home page slider on Friday, and plan to join us Sunday morning at 8:00 Chicago time and then every three hours throughout the day – only on our webstream.
