Make workdays a breeze! Or at home, in your car, wherever you are.

Even before Caetano Veloso became the worldwide musical phenomenon he is today, the singer from Bahia was visionary in a very societal way: He once was arrested for wearing a see-through plastic suit during a college protest concert durng Brazil dictatorship. Nothing (except perhaps the cloths he wears) has changed now that he is an accomplished statesman of Brazilian song.

I was fortunate to interview him in the mid-80's (one of the first interviews with Caetano published here in the US) and you'll find a link to our StoryStream below. Along with a playlist of his greatest hits...

Front Row, Center:  Caetano Veloso's 2nd US tour of the year visits only three cities and his Chicago date on Sunday Ociotber 16th is the only midwest venue. This is the same show debuted in Rio two weeks ago and it introduces us to Rio's Samba star, Teresa Cristina. It's his first Chicago concert in several years, so let's all meet up at Chicago Sympny Center... after clicking into our StoryStream (did you know Caetano made the President's personal playlist?).

Sunday’s ‘Brazilian Brunch’ on The Sounds of Brazil! We'll feature singer Leila Pinheiro on her birthday, with plenty of her best songs. Sundays only: three consecutive hours beginning at 9 am CT (Chicago time) and then again at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm CT. You'll find our weekly preview on our home page every Sunday.

This week’s show:

My Producer's Notes

Listen to The Sounds of Brazil every three hours beginning at 6am Central Time daily.

In 2013, Caetano Veloso was named the Latin Recording Academy’s reigning ‘Person of The Year’ and there’s no doubt: as a singer, songwriter, poet, author, philosopher and cultural crusader, he is nothing less than prolific.

Hold that thought, because when you consider the breadth of both style and substance put forth by Veloso throughout his long career, it’s possible that the word ‘prolific’ pales in definition. His creativity is an elemental part of Brazil’s musical lexicon. The lyrics of his songs are taught as poetry in Brazilian middle schools.

But, even with multiple Grammy awards, more than 50 recordings and literally hundreds of songs written, Veloso’s music can be an acquired taste: something the lofty New York Times once hinted at when it referred to Veloso as “Brazil’s Bob Dylan.”

But Dylan had it easy when compared to the path Veloso followed. Years ago, I had the chance to meet up with him in Rio and you can read the interview here. It’s an eye-opener.

Outstanding as a lyricist and masterful as a melody-maker, I’ve decided to include a few of both to feature Brazil’s most popular performer. And Veloso is surrounded with a diverse playlist that I’m sure would meet with his approval: From Bebel Gilberto to Milton Nascimento, Pat Metheny to Boosh Boosh and Phonorama to João Gilberto here’s a great show to lead off our September Sambas theme this month.
