New Ink Creates A Fan Story For Ivan Lins

A Sao Paulo Millennial share a touching story of her life and what Ivan's music means to her family

This week’s show:

My Producer's Notes

Listen to The Sounds of Brazil every three hours beginning at 6am Central Time daily.

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Ivan Lins’ voice. It came by way of a single song, soon after the release of ‘Harlequin’ in 1985. Although the song was his, the album was a joint project between guitarist Lee Ritenour and pianist Dave Grusin and I recall that the first minute or so left me completely overwhelmed: so much passion and power and beauty. How could all of this course straight through me, without even a moment to absorb what it all meant?

You can judge for yourself: I'll play that very song in our second hour.

It was on that day that I learned about the essence of Brazilian music, and Ivan Lins proved to be a great teacher. He’s written a Grammy winner for Quincy Jones and penned hits for Elis Regina, George Benson, Brenda Russell, Peter White and many others. He made his home in Boston and Los Angeles for a long while. In fact, his story as one of Brazil’s greatest songwriters is infused with our own American culture – to such a degree that it sets him apart from many of his peers back home in Brazil.

Early influences? How about Blood, Sweat & Tears’ lead singer David Clayton Thomas? Lins emulated the top 40 singer’s voice while on the path to finding his own signature style – plaintive, soulful. The essence of emotion.

Ivan Lins is a perennial favorite with our coast to coast audience and we’ll take two full hours to explore his music as we get a head start on next month’s ‘Singers & Songwriters’ theme, with ‘Ivan Songs’ from Luiz Avellar, Mike Metheny, sax great Grover Washington, Jr., Lee Ritenour, Chaka Khan and Barbra Streisand, too.

Plus two duets anchored by Ivan Lins: going acoustic with Oscar Castro-Neves and then 80′s MPB with Djavan, in a playlist that includes music from German trumpeter Till Brönner, Caibedo Island plus a New Bossa request for Brazilian Jumble.

Among the non-English-speaking nations of the world, Brazil enjoys a rare and vibrant cultural connection with America that is not merely the product of Embassies and trade relations. Stories like Ivan Lins’ remind us of the power of one-to-one, which expands to amplify both the commonality and the distinctiveness of each nation. In fact, it plays its part in what makes both of our countries magnificent.

A cool breeze in Summer, and a warm wind when the weather turns cold – that’s The Sounds of Brazil!
