The Sounds of Brazil Summer Tee's!

This week’s show:

My Producer's Notes

This week, we’ll kick off a new radio theme with ‘The Brazilian Side’ of Michael Franks. It’s the first of four weekly shows featuring a quartet of iconic pop musicians, including Frank Sinatra, the Beatles and Stevie Wonder.

We know Michael Franks for his own albums and memorable songs. Longtime fans still embrace Franks for songs like "Monkey See - Monkey Do", "The Lady Wants To Know", "Chain Reaction", "When The Cookie Jar Is Empty", "Your Secret's Safe With Me", "Practice Makes Perfect" and "Somehow Our Love Survives". They still bring a quick smile.

But you may not know that he’s penned lyrics for dozens of hit makers, including Antonio Carlos Jobim and Djavan. I thought that it would be fun to let Michael tell his Jobim story:

"I had met Jobim in November of '75, and I remember sitting in his upper Eastside New York City apartment, listening to rough mixes of "The Art of Tea" on a portable Sony cassette deck- astonished that I was in such close proximity to my idol and reduced to stunned, but happy speechlessness by his praise for my songs," recalls singer Michael Franks. "One of the highest compliments I've ever received was hearing him absent-mindedly scat the melody of 'Eggplant' as he walked into his kitchen to make us more coffee."

So it begins…

Our two-hour show highlights songs from his latest album plus some of his most memorable Brazilian tunes including "Amazon" and "Like Water, Like Wind", his musical memorial to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim. There are others: "Down In Brazil" is sung by Carol Conner plus Natalie Cole's hit remake of "Tell Me All About It", a sleek, sexy samba that gives more than a passing nod to Franks' love of Brazilian song.

There’s more: Emilio Santiago, Bossacucanova and Deodato share our playlist this week, along with a Samba Soul hit from Erasmo Carlos in the Brazil Club Lounge.

Michael Franks again: "Jobim invited us to record in Rio and on his advice we were sumptuously ensconced in a beautiful and famous old hotel called The Copacabana Palace, where our rooms overlooked the beach beyond a wide boulevard. My first night there I picked up the guitar and wrote most of 'Antonio's Song', from the sheer inspiration of being inRio as the guest of its most famous citizen."

A cool breeze in summer, and warm wind when the weather turns cold - that's The Sounds of Brazil. Here are the showtimes.
