This week’s show:

My Producer's Notes

Listen to The Sounds of Brazil every three hours beginning at 6am Central Time daily.

Leo Gandelman graces our playlist this week with good reason: Like many of MPB's top stars, his career dovetailed with the rise of contemporary jazz here in the US, first with jazz fusion, then on the smooth jazz and beyond. And it begs a 'home town' question.

Is Rio de Janeiro the world’s most musical city? History suggests that it is; Rio gave birth to Samba in the early 1900’s (near the legendary Sambadrome). Bossa Nova was born in the beach bairros of Ipanema and Copacabana. Rio’s rhythm is a musical one. You can sense it in the bustle of sidewalk traffic, the pulse of the surf. Heck, even the airport is named after Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Brazil’s musical lines tend to blur when it comes to a jazzy sound. It’s homegrown ‘Choro’ swings easily and both Bossa Nova and Brazilian pop (MPB) trade on a jazzy currency, too. So it’s only natural that Rio has produced generations of talented musicians and you’ll hear many of them on our playlist this week.

We’ll hear from Leo Gandelman’s first US release featuring Torcuato Mariano’s guitar, Gal Costa with a beautiful ballad about the magic of Brazilian song, and Emilio Santiago revives classic from the Great American Songbook.

Homegrown talent? How about Sinatra, Miami’s Atlantico and New York’s Mike Catalano at the piano for ‘Take Me Back To Rio’?

Djavan’s ‘Cigano’ serves up one of the best horn solos to begin a song that I’ve ever heard, while Rosalia de Souza swings a Jazz Samba from her latest album. We’ll go ‘Old School’ with songs from Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa and there’s even a three-song salute to Rio’s legendary jazz group Azymuth.

And of course, more of Rio's Jazzmasters throughout the week during the Midday Show, 9 am - 3 pm daily on our streaming station. Here'es our on-air schedule.
