Kenia is a contemporary jazz legend and a Brazilian American sensation with a talent that embodies the best of the modern Brazilian sound: a romantic cross between pop, Bossa and classic MPB that plays well with a tapestry of Brazilian influences.  Her 1987 album Initial Thrill was the first of several recordings to ride the New Age wave and it established her as one of the early favorites of the crossover genre. Busy with her US tour, Brazil Club caught up with her to pose these 10 Questions.

10Q: What is the greatest Brazilian song ever written?

‘Aquarela do Brasil’ by Ary Barroso.

10Q: What is your greatest achievement?

Aside from having raised two awesome young sons, being recognized by my peers with a Latin Grammy nomination has been a crowning moment!

10Q: Do you have a hobby?

I love throwing clay on the wheel. Pottery is one of the most relaxing activities for me. Although I've been away from it in the last couple of years, I can't wait to get back in the studio. In the meantime, I've been learning to play golf and I have the feeling that once I get a bit more training, it could easily get addicted to it.

10Q: What is a typical day in your life like?

I wake up early to have breakfast with my husband. Once he leaves for work, I catch up with the day's news. Whenever possible I hit the gym. Then it's back home for vocal calisthenics and to the home office to tend to the business of a record label professional! There are always emails, phone calls, and the regular, accumulating tasks that we all hate to do waiting at home for me.

10Q: What do you think Brazil will be like in 50 years?

Brazil will be a well-developed country with a strong government committed to the well-being of its people, capable of administering our abundant natural resources competently. Education will be our stronghold. Foolish perhaps, but I refuse to cave in to cynicism. I would rather have faith. I believe.

10Q: What words of wisdom guide your life?

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” – Winston Churchill “Tough times don't last, tough people do.” – Robert Schuman “The hunchback knows how to lay down.” (meaning: don't question another’s decisions – they know what's best for them) – My mother

10Q: What do you believe is the most pivotal decision that you’ve made in your career?

The launching of my own label (Mooka Records) in 1996. It was a major undertaking, as well as an amazing learning experience. Through it I learned to appreciate the complexity of this evolving industry. Most of all I've learned to persevere, to be resilient, and to be patient (although some people might dispute that), and I believe I have accomplished a lot with my staff of two.

10Q: What’s the one ‘chore’ that you hate to do?

Database management!

10Q: If you could meet anyone from history, who would that person be?

Eleanor Roosevelt.

10Q: What is the future of Brazilian jazz?

It will continue to spread like a good, strong weed.
