2015's Carnaval Champs Crowned In Brazil

Brazil’s Carnaval competitions in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro has ended for 2015, with the winning Escolas de Samba (Samba Schools) crowned on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Sao Paulo

It was a surprise victory for the Samba School called Vai-Vai, who emerged as champions with their theme celebration the musical life of Elis Regina, on the 30th anniversary of her passing. Even Regina’s daughter Maria Rita joined the marchers to sing the group’s carnaval theme.

Rio de Janeiro

Meanwhile, in Rio a tight battle for the carnaval crown erupted on the parade route at the world-famous Sambadromo. In the end, The Beija-Flor samba group scored a popular win when it was been declared the champion.

The group stoked controversy by staging a presentation focusing on Equatorial Guinea, run by Africa's longest-ruling dictator, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Rio's samba parade competition among the top 12 groups is hotly contested and closely followed in the country, where the two nights of parades are broadcast live. Judges gave each school a rating in nine categories.
