October is a special month for women’s empowerment and we’re celebrating Brazil’s ‘National Day of Brazilian Popular Music’, held every year on musical pioneer Chiquinha Gonzaga’s birthday.

Chiquinha Gonzaga

Gonzaga was the first woman to conduct an orchestra in Brazil. In 1899, she composed the very first marching samba for the Carnaval parades.

She was also an inspirational leader for several of Brazil's most important social issues of her day, including Brazil's abolition of slavery, years before the United States. Learn more about her life and the historic role she played here.

Listen to Friday's Brazil Back2Back

We’ll feature two songs handpicked by one of the Brazilian/American community’s top female entrepreneurs, Chicago’s Ana Santos-Vitelo.  Ana is profiled in ‘Today’s Inspired Latina’ and is owner of Brazil Express Grill in Schaumburg.

Ana's musical choices include a song from 2015 Latin Grammy nominee Maria Gadu and a song from Joyce Moreno, the first female musician in Brazil to write lyrics from a woman's perspective.

Be sure to listen to Ana Santos-Vitelo's two-in-a-row, Friday at 11 am and 2 pm Central, and consider a visit to Brazil Express Grill sometime soon.
