The Sounds of Brazil's streaming radio makes workdays a breeze: Listen to The Midday Show, 9 am Central!

It's no surprise that Brazilian sugarcane growers wasted no time in distilling the harvest; the potent libation helped ward off the ever-present heat and humidity, and the wretched work of carving out a life in the New World. So, go ahead. Take a sip.

Most countries have one or two signature beverages that are world famous: Irish whiskey, German beer, Italian reds.  Brazil has its own entry in this crowded international field. It’s a clear fragrant rum di ...

Experience: Barrichello Wins Indy 500...

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:32 pm

Ten years ago, Sao Paulo's Rubens Barrichello arrived at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a decade of Formula One experience and left with the winner’s cup, but not on the famous 2.5-mile oval. - Scott Adams

Barrichello essentially went to school in the first half of the race, being patient, adapting to running in packs and dealing with the turbulence. By Lap 148 he was in the top 10, and over the final 50 laps fought to remain there.
Listen to The Brazilian Minute for the complete history of Brazil at the Indy 500 here
"It was a great achievement today. The first oval experience; it was very different than anything I've done. We carried too much downforce all the ...

My Page: Thank You

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:32 pm

Tonight, at 10:00 pm central time July 30, 2011 on Chicago’s Smooth 87.7 and our webcast channel at Connectbrazil.com, The Sounds of Brazil will mark its 1,000th weekly radio broadcast.
It’s an event that was unimaginable when it debuted on commercial radio in Chicago in July, 1992; taking over the 10:00 pm Saturday time slot from saxophonist David Sanborn’s show on WNUA. Less than three months later, The Sounds of Brazil racked up its first #1 listener rating from Arbitron; a feat that would be repeated 26  times over the years. Getting to #1 is a real challenge in the competitive world of commercial radio, but I take great pride in reaching achievements like these ...

Experience: 60 Minutes 'Brazil's Risi...

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:31 pm

In 2010, ‘60 Minutes’ CBS correspondent Steve Kroft noted that “while most of the world is consumed with debt and unemployment, Brazil is trying to figure out how to manage an economic boom.”
But much has changed in three short years: President Lula's handpicked (and democratically elected) successor has had to deal with rising inflation, currency wars and widespread corruption. The progress that created a thriving middle class is being whittled away and Brazilians are no longer willing to be complacent about their future.
A look back helps to put current events into perspective. Watch the complete 60 Minutes report (below) and then decide: Is Brazil (as ...

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:31 pm

Paulinho Garcia brings Brazil Club fans up to date with his latest project - the 100th anniversary tribute to Brazilian pop songwriter, Noel Rosa. He writes: On December 11, 2010 we’ll be producing a concert honoring our “Poeta da Vila - Poet of the Vila”, Noel Rosa. The event will be at the International House of the University of Chicago. We will build the stage set to resemble a bar from the 1920’s Vila Isabel, all in wood. The musicians will perform seated around tables as in a typical Carioca bar scene. The repertoire will include a selection of the best works of Noel interpreted by the great names of Chicago’s Brazilian artists.

Experience! / Review: ‘The Party In T...

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:31 pm

As our Brazilian American community continues to expand and integrate, it’s nice to see an addition like Antonio Rocha’s ‘The Party In The Sky/A Festa do Céu’ make its way on to our family bookshelves.

We all know the many values of reading at an early age: It promotes a wonderful bond between parents and children, helps to build vocabularies and stimulates young imaginations. Often, there’s a lesson to be learned; one which can aid the development of values and beliefs. Rocha’s book, based on an old Brazilian tale, does all of this and more by adding a sense of personal discovery while showing us the possibilities of darin ...

Kenia is a contemporary jazz legend and a Brazilian American sensation with a talent that embodies the best of the modern Brazilian sound: a romantic cross between pop, Bossa and classic MPB that plays well with a tapestry of Brazilian influences.  Her 1987 album Initial Thrill was the first of several recordings to ride the New Age wave and it established her as one of the early favorites of the crossover genre. Busy with her US tour, Brazil Club caught up with her to pose these 10 Questions.

IN Muisc / Review: Toco's 'Outro Lugar'

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:31 pm

Beautiful Bossas and svelte Sambas form the basis for Toco and his sophomore follow up to ‘Instalação do Samba’. The sessions were recorded in Rio with production by S-Tone, and feature some wonderful acoustic guitar play from the legendary Roberto Menescal. His presence here really helps give the record a classic Bossa feel – there’s a distinct reflection of the true nature of the original Bossa beat, but with an updated style that keeps it fresh, without resorting to clichés.
