by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 08/31/2013 - 09:08 am

It’s not often that we get to welcome the start of a brand new month on the Sunday Brazilian Brunch, let alone one that begins a new season on a holiday weekend.
New season? Yep, the beginning of meteorological fall hints at the arrival of spring in Brazil, giving us yet another reason to celebrate with… a new radio theme, too: September Sambas!
So you’re invited to join me this Sunday when I’ll feature music from several of the artists you’ll hear on The Sounds of Brazil later this month, including Sergio Mendes, Sandro Albert, Rosalia de Souza and Basia.
And we’ll wrap up a month of listener requests for a favorite female voca ...

Remembering Dominguinhos

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 08/28/2013 - 07:15 pm

Eu só quero um amor / que acabe o meu sofrer / um xodó pra mim / do meu jeito assim / que alegre o meu viver.
I just want a love / to end my suffering / one darling for me / my way is like this / the joy of my living.
Listen to Dominguuinhos on "Eu Só Quero Um Xodó" with Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil during the Third Hour on our webstream this week.

Celebrating The Brazilian Hour

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 08/27/2013 - 02:00 pm

Thirty-five years ago, Brazil’s Sergio Mielniczenko was a voice in the wilderness: his new radio program ‘The Brazilian Hour’ had made its first broadcast in Los Angeles, on KXLU at Loyola Marymount University. Not quite the same as growing up in a musical neighborhood in busy, bustling Sao Paulo. But youth and dreams can be an intoxicating combination.
"During my second year of college, I went to work at the Brazilian consulate. And soon after the Brazilian Cultural department, or "sector," was created,” he recently told Jeremy Rosenberg.
“I had like ten albums, I borrowed the rest from friends.  One day soon after that, I was recording a show at the Br ...

Who is she: Her father’s daughter
Why Is she important: Still Brazil’s reining Diva

One fan might have summed it up best last night during the ‘after set’ for Bebel Gilberto at Chicago’s City Winery: “It’s a universal vibe. It’s like we’re all friends through her music but nobody knows each other and so we all just seem get together whenever she’s here.”
Totally in keeping with Bebel’s unique ability to connect with a crowd. Opening with ‘Traquilo’ from her Momento album, she absorbed th ...

Friendly Florianopolis

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 08/09/2013 - 10:48 pm

When Brazil's popular newsweekly Veja opined that the south Brazilian city of Florianopolis was "the best place to live in Brazil", they may have been on to something. In they might even have been prescient: Earlier this week Condé Nast Traveler published its list of the world's friendliest cities for 2013.
And the island city of Florianopolis is at the top of the list.
Pulling in an impressive reader's rating of 95.8, Florianopolis doesn't  even rank in the top 50 of Brazil's cities, yet its historic charm is undeniable. One reader commented, “This area was stunningly beautiful and you could take  advantage of the reliable, friendly advice of outgoing locals. As an ...

Funny thing about nicknames: They often reveal more about the person than they initially intend. Take João Gilberto for example. It wasn’t long after he recorded “Chega de Saudade” in 1958 that he picked ...
