It’s the music of Leila Pinheiro Today on The Sunday Brazilian Brunch. The singer from Brazil’s far northeastern city of Belem has been a creative force since a move to Rio in the early 80’s set the stage for a stellar career. In fact, many critics place her in between Elis Regina and Marisa Monte in the continuum of Brazilian song.

A statue honoring Brazilian singer-composer Antonio Carlos ‘Tom’ Jobim was unveiled Wednesday (10th) at the Zona Sul beach where it all began for the Bossa Nova beat back in the late 1950’s.
Located midway along Ipanema’s stretch of sun-soaked sand, and situated casually upon its black and white tiled mosaic sidewalk, the 200 kilo bronze statue depicting Jobim with a guitar slung over his shoulder to mark the 20th anniversary of Jobim’s passing. ‘I chose to represent a young and handsome Tom Jobim showing him at the peak of his success in t ...

How elemental is music to the Brazilian way of life? Here’s a story: In 1989, W/Brasil (a top ad agency) rolled out a brand new campaign for Rider Sandals and the big star was the music featured in TV spots.
The idea was to showcase Brazilian Pop stars recreating favorite hit songs. The first was with Paralamas do Sucesso doing Jorge Ben’s ‘País Tropical’. Marina Lima came up with a new version of a Rita Lee tune. In 1993, Tim Maia - who was already a big fan of Rider sandals - recreated Lulu Santos’ and Nelson Motta’s ‘Como Uma Onda&rsquo ...

October 17th is ‘Dia da MPB’ in Brazil
In keeping with the largely feminine nature of Brazilian song, the day commemorates the birth of pianist Chiquinha Gonzaga in 1847. She is widely regarded by cultural scholars as the first popular songwriter of Brazil.
MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) has its roots in samba but has grown to encompass and loosely define a variety of musical styles. Chiquinha composed several songs that today are part of the Brazilian cultural universe, including the samba marcinha 'Abre Alas'.
In past decades MPB has included early pioneers of Br ...

With only a handful of concerts and no news of a new album, Brazil Club can report that this has been a quiet year for Marisa Monte. But it hasn’t kept her out of the spotlight. Late last month, she made news in Rio when she stole the show at the annual Prêmio Sharp awards, Brazil’s equivalent to our Grammy Awards. She won the jury votes for “Best Female Singer” and “Best ‘Live’ DVD”, and was the ‘People’s Choice’ for “Best Female Singer” too.

When Dori Caymmi’s song 'Like A Lover' became a hit for Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, it opened the door to a career that spanned two continents. Caymmi's penchant for musical storytelling is unique. He’s blessed with a matched set of musical talent:  Lilting, gentle melodies that recall his native Bahia, and a voice that is part arid cerrado and part ocean breeze.
Dori Caymmi's birthday is Tuesday. We'll celebrate with several o ...
