How elemental is music to the Brazilian way of life? Here’s a story: In 1989, W/Brasil (a top ad agency) rolled out a brand new campaign for Rider Sandals and the big star was the music featured in TV spots.
The idea was to showcase Brazilian Pop stars recreating favorite hit songs. The first was with Paralamas do Sucesso doing Jorge Ben’s ‘País Tropical’. October 17th is ‘Dia da MPB’ in Brazil
In keeping with the largely feminine nature of Brazilian song, the day commemorates the birth of pianist Chiquinha Gonzaga in 1847. She is widely regarded by cultural scholars as the first popular songwriter of Brazil.
MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) has its roots in samba but has grown to encompass and loosely define a variety of musical styles. Chiquinha composed several songs that today are part of the Brazilian cultural universe, including the samba marcinha 'Abre Alas'.

With only a handful of concerts and no news of a new album, Brazil Club can report that this has been a quiet year for Marisa Monte. But it hasn’t kept her out of the spotlight. Late last month, she made news in Rio when she stole the show at the annual Prêmio Sharp awards, Brazil’s equivalent to our Grammy Awards.
