October 16th Is The Night.

October 16th promises to be a special night for Chicago’s Brazilian music fans of Brazil Club. Somehow the stars have aligned to bring us not one, but two top Brazilian performers that night. Rio's Ed Motta will be at Mayne Stage in Rogers Park, and The Talisman Project with Latin Percussionist Sammy Figueria and Brazil's Glaucia Nasser will be on satge at City Winery. Both of these acts will be making their Chicago debuts.

Ed Motta at Mayne Stage

Rio’s Ed Motta will bring his jazzy style of Brazilian Pop and R&B to Mayne Stage. Lauded by top music critics from London, New York and Los Angeles, Ed Motta’s musical energy draws from his time living here in the ‘States and by pedigree: he’s the nephew of legendary Brazilian pop singer Tim Maia. So Ed Motta’s show is not only an opportunity to enjoy an evening of great music, but to make a connection with one of Rio’s most exciting musical styles.

By way of introduction, here’s a video from Ed Motta’s latest album, "AOR" (taking a few cues from Steely Dan) and here's another video from his uncle, Tim Maia (1970's).

The Talisman Project at City Winery

Across town, City Winery Chicago will host the debut of The Talisman Project, an acoustic quartet led by New York’s Latin percussion master Sammy Figueroa and Brazilian vocalist Glaucia Nasser. Together, with pianist Bianca Gismonti and guitarist Chico Pinheiro (both from Brazil), the music is richly rhythmic; to accompany beautifully textured melodies. The musical blending of these two cultures is both impressive and rewarding.  Figueroa’s percussion has accompanied a long list of outstanding musicians, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Tania Maria and Daniela Mercury, and Nasser (whose song ‘Lábios de Cetim’ was handpicked by Putumayo for its ‘Acoustic Brazil’ sampler) has four albums to her credit in Brazil and is definitely a star on the rise.

Here’s a video of The Talisman Project to enjoy.
