Divas... and more

This week, we’re off to explore the artistic soul of Brazil, using Google Maps Street View as our guide.

Salvador, Bahia sits on Brazil’s northeastern coast, bathed in sunshine and near-equatorial heat. The 468 year-old city was a main port-of-call for the trade routes and slave ships from Angola and the Gold Coast before sailing on to Havana and New Orleans and it’s because of this that Bahia has the strongest cultural connection to Mother Africa in our hemisphere.

This is where the roots of Brazilian music have incubated to inspire this week’s show, ‘Divas From Bahia’!

Our playlist focuses in on the music of several of Bahia’s best: Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury, Astrud Gilberto, Maria Bethania, Nana Caymmi and Vania Abreu.
