Beginning on Thursday, February 7th and continuing weekly this month, Brazil Club will present Black Brazil 2013 from its home page by featuring individual profiles of 12 outstanding members of our community in conjunction with Black History Month. 

Every Thursday edition will feature a personality from each of three cultural perspectives:  1) Music and the Arts, 2) Brazilian History and 3) Brazilian Americans.

The profiles will also be presented as broadcast features on the Brazil Club Radio Network, including The Sounds of Brazil!, the Extended Channel and Brazilian Blend.

Back2Black Music Festival
 
Gilberto Gil struck the right chord when he launched this three-day festival in 2009. Held annually in the historic Leopoldinha Station district near downtown Rio de Janeiro, Back2Black seeks to entertain, stimulate, raise awareness and rebuild stronger bridges for Brazil’s African heritage through music, art and discussion. Last summer this unique expression of cultural pride traveled to London as part of Brazil’s exhibition for the summer Olympic Games. Public response was enthusiastic.

In many ways, Brazil’s passion for Carnaval - and even the spirit of Samba itself – can be traced to Ernesto Joaquim Maria dos Santos, who was known as Donga. Donga is credited as the first to record a genuine Samba song, ‘Pelo Telefone’ in 1917 and was among a handful of Black Brazilians who evolved the uniquely Brazilian song style. The song marked the beginning of a cultural transformation for Brazil which expanded beyond popular music. Today Samba is at the very core of Brazil’s cultural identity.

This shooting Guard for the Boston Celtics was born and raised in São Paulo, and is one of several Brazilians playing in the NBA. In Brazil he is nicknamed ‘Leandrinho’ (Little Leandro), but here in the US he’s called "The Brazilian Blur" because he is one of the fastest players in the League.
