The Waters of March: The Story Behind...

Spring can be the most fickle of seasons, especially here in Chicago. Last year, we were basking in a nine-day stretch of 80 degree weather, but as I write, the wind chills are driving the cold into single digits. “In like a lion, out like a lamb?”  We can only hope…
Down south, the seasons are reversed and spring follows the Brazilian summer as the beginning of the rainy season (only the very southern parts of Brazil ever see snow). Brazilian rains can be both powerful and prolonged, and the red clay washes away easily.
I guess it’s no surprise that spring’s ‘fluid’ nature has found it way into song, and that’s way I like to feature a ...

What is it: Time to ‘spring ahead’.
Why is it important: If you don’t change your clock, you might be late, which almost never happens in Brazil.

Time’s up! If you’re planning a call home to mom, or ready to schedule a conference call with a client in São Paulo, take note of America’s annual ‘spring ahead’ time change, which takes place this Sunday morning at 2:00 am.
Here in the good ol' USA, be sure to set yo ...

As our world grows ever smaller, the prominence of cultural icons such as Elis Regina begins to shrink as well, slowly replaced by the quickening pace of the latest trend, the 24 hour news cycle, and the next Twitter subject for his or her “140 characters of fame.”
This is the time of year where, as Spring arrives and clocks likewise “spring ahead”, we stop to look back at the woman who many consider to be Brazil’s greatest singer. So, for taking ...

Where “Out” Means Something Completely Different to Brazilian Dogs

In case you haven’t noticed, sometimes things work a little differently in Brazil. Pizza is better, coffee is defiantly better (even at Starbucks) and politics? Well okay, that’s actually about the same.
Beach volleyball is played without using your hands, and for the second year in a row, ball boys at the Brazil Open on the red clay courts of Pinheiros in Sao Paulo have be ...

It’s been 33 years since Rio’s most-awarded Samba school has won overall honors as Rio de Janeiro’s Champion of Carnaval, but Portela’s long drought officially ended yesterday when it was crowned as 2017’s winner.
Reflecting a political tone carried by many of Rio’s Samba Schools this year, Portela’s marching theme was titled ‘The Water of Rivers’; ...
