Crossing Borders

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 05/11/2013 - 09:51 pm

Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. Antonio Carlos Jobim and Creed Taylor. Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. The US and Brazil have a long history when it comes to crossing borders, and what better way to appreciate it than with music?

Today, those legendary names have given way to closer generations of talented performers from both countries who have taken bold steps to traverse the distance between our two cultures. Sometimes the length of the journey can best be measured in terms of careers – or even in the minutes and seconds of a single song. Guitarists Lee Ritenour and Charlie Byrd come from opposite ends of the jazz spectrum, yet both have played an important role in br ...

Tropicalia at 50: Mingling Music & Myth

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 05/07/2013 - 11:09 pm

The Music: Tropicalia is undeniably one of the most misunderstood and misidentified forms of Brazilian pop music.
Tropicalia (aka Tropicália or Tropicálismo) is undeniably one of the most misunderstood and misidentified forms of Brazilian pop music. Much of the confusion comes from the seeds of its creation and from the mostly unstructured desire of Brazil's youth generation of the late 60s to make an indelible cultural statement of its own.
Beyond the impetus ...

IN Music: Brazilian Chill Sessions

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 04/17/2013 - 10:18 pm

Leave it to a small Indie label in Argentina to pull together a dozen of the best New Bossa songs – each featuring a different musician or group – from the four corners of the globe to produce one of the best genre collections we’ve heard in a long time.

Brazil Club recommends:

Purchase CD here.             Purchase digital download here.

Over the past decade, New Bossa has come of age: progressing from the smoky influence of Acid Jazz and the come-and-gone novelty of the Chill and Lounge scene to stake out its own piece of the Brazilian music landscape. And while most of this music today comes ...

Ipanema Lounge

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 01/30/2013 - 01:52 am

Sometimes the music business makes for strange bedfellows, as the old saying goes. It can also provide for an interesting story or two – and in this case the tale is made even better because it centers on a mysterious recording from a popular group that –  years later – has become known as one of its ‘defining’ albums. - Scott Adams

It was late summer, 2004 and the voice on the other end of the phone was… hot, California hot. You see, I was talking with the American label contact for Bossacucanova only a few days after the US release of their ‘Uma Batida Diferente’ album and the source of all this heat was another CD, sit ...

IN Muisc / Review: Toco's 'Outro Lugar'

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:31 pm

Beautiful Bossas and svelte Sambas form the basis for Toco and his sophomore follow up to ‘Instalação do Samba’. The sessions were recorded in Rio with production by S-Tone, and feature some wonderful acoustic guitar play from the legendary Roberto Menescal. His presence here really helps give the record a classic Bossa feel – there’s a distinct reflection of the true nature of the original Bossa beat, but with an updated style that keeps it fresh, without resorting to clichés.

IN Music/Review: Sergio Mendes & Bras...

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 07/04/2012 - 03:31 pm

2010 marked the 44th anniversary of this group and what better way to celebrate than with a dozen of their songs? Each of these were pop sensations, a vibrantly exuberant combination of two cultures, two languages and two female voices (Lani Hall & Janis Hansen, or Karen Philipp) singing as one.

The year also marks the fourth decade of one of the top Brazilian music trivia questions: Is it ‘Mais Que Nada’ or ‘Mas Que Nada’? Sergio’s various CDs show it both ways, and even Brazilian musicians aren’t sure.
