Rosa Passos’ Giant Step

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 04/11/2015 - 12:32 pm

Rosa Passos’ Giant Step

And we have the world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma to thank for it. Backstage, I asked him how he came across the Brazilian singer. “It was quite by accident,” he exclaimed. “It was all quite by accident.”
Accidents happen.
Ma, who stands nearly alone in the universe of class ...

Late last month, she made news in Rio when she stole the show at the annual Prêmio Sharp awards, Brazil’s equivalent to our Grammy Awards. She won the jury votes for “Best Female Singer” and “Best ‘Live’ DVD”, and was the ‘People’s Choice’ for “Best Female Singer” too.

One of Brazil's most celebrated Chefs is on a personal mission to get you excited about Brazilian cuisine, as he tells Jenny Barchfield.

It’s bad enough that so few people outside Brazil know much about the country’s cuisine. But Alex Atala finds it particularly galling that even at home it rarely gets the respect it deserves.
“We are so proud of our soccer, our models, our music, our graffiti artists. Why is no one excited about Brazilian food?” the nation’s No. 1 chef — and the man behind Sao Paulo-based D.O.M., one of the top-ranked resta ...

I just want a love / to end my suffering / one darling for me / my way is like this / the joy of my living.

Celebrating The Brazilian Hour

by Brazil Club - Let The Music Take You There on 08/27/2013 - 02:00 pm

Thirty-five years ago, Brazil’s Sergio Mielniczenko was a voice in the wilderness: his new radio program ‘The Brazilian Hour’ had made its first broadcast in Los Angeles, on KXLU at Loyola Marymount University. Not quite the same as growing up in a musical neighborhood in busy, bustling Sao Paulo. But youth and dreams can be an intoxicating combination.
"During my second year of college, I went to work at the Brazilian consulate. And soon after the Brazilian Cultural department, or "sector," was created,” he recently told Jeremy Rosenberg.
“I had like ten albums, I borrowed the rest from friends.  One day soon after that, I was recording a show at the Br ...

Funny thing about nicknames: They often reveal more about the person than they initially intend. Take João Gilberto for example. It wasn’t long after he recorded “Chega de Saudade” in 1958 that he picked ...

Each week, The Sounds of Brazil! broadcasts the very best in Brazilian music, and we always try to compliment our weekly focus with an eye-catching image to help spark your imagination (and make you smile!).

For this week’s Beach Blanket Bossa radio program, we didn’t have to look far: it turns out that the artist for this wonderful painting lives in coastal Florida, as a very creative member of our Brazilian–American community.
Brazilian-born, Ana Bondarenko-Machado started painting at the age of 12, and exhibiting her creations at 16 years old. Inspired by her travels, nature and architectural appreciation, Ana's paintings convey a powerful sense of an emotional ...
