October's Radio Theme

Our month-long feature ‘Songs In The Feminine Key’ kicks off this week with another radio and streaming special for The Sounds of Brazil: ‘The Girls From Ipanema’, and it begins where we left off with last week’s 50 career-year slate to Gal Costa.

There’s a reason why Rio de Janeiro is called the ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’ - it’s not only inspired hundreds of memorable songs, it’s also paved the way for countless talented Brazilian performers drawn to the city’s iconic locale.

This playlist focuses on the women, with tunes from 14 famous female voices who call Rio home, including Eliane Elias, Joyce, Astrud Gilberto, Zizi Possi and others. As you'll hear, Jobim’s famous song 'The Girl From Ipanema' was only the beginning

You’ll hear a pair of new music entries on the playlist this week, too. So, here’s a little more about two of Rio’s Millennial voices.

‘Vento Praia Nordeste’ by Zanna

To be honest, ‘vocalist’ is not at the top of the list for this talented Carioca. Zanna (above) has a decade of experience a as successful businesswoman in Rio’s competitive audio production industry, focusing on Sound Branding for a long list of international clients. If you’ve ever used Rio’s Metro system, you may already be familiar with her voice: She’s announced the station stops and general information since 2011. Zanna is also the voice you hear at Rio’s charming Santos Dumont airport. This year’s self-titled album is her first since 2003 and features several of Brazil’s best musicians.

‘Will I See You’ by Anitta

Four years ago, Forbes asked the question “Could Anita Be A Global Superstar?” Well, you can now safely remove the word ‘could’. #1 pop singles? Check. Sings in Portuguese, Spanish and English? (note to other Brazilian singers…) Check. Anitta recorded  “Will I See You’ with Poo Bear and a musical gift for his birthday. Sweet.

There’s on The Sounds of Brazil this week: We’ll dive into the archives for a few more 25th Anniversary favorites from Indigo City, Djavan and Joanna as we celebrate a quarter of a century online and on the radio.

So tell a friend about The Sounds of Brazil, then join me on the radio or the stream of your choice! You can post a comment and share this story, too. Liek the song says :That would be nice!"
