A Musical Introduction

Meet Teresa Cristina, Rio’s most passionate voice in the revitalization of Samba in the city where it all began, nearly 100 years ago. The young singer was at the forefront of Carioca Samba back in the 90’s when she became a popular weekend fixture at the Samba da Roda bars in Lapa, earning her reputation as a passionate voice for Brazil’s signature song style with an ever-growing fan base.

Today, the bars in Lapa have been replaced by legendary venues on the world stage: Teresa Cristina performs with Caetano Veloso on an eight-city tour, starting at Le Lavage de la Madeleine festival in Paris, then on to New York City, Fort Lauderdale and... Chicago Symphony Center on Sunday, October 16th, giving Chicago fans a head start to 2017's 100 Years of Samba celebration.

What To Expect

Cristina’s tribute to Cartola, the pioneering Samba star, is at the center of her performances these days. But she’ll make some musical introductions of her own by interpreting the music of the greatest names in Brazilian popular music, such as Nelson Cavaquinho, Antônio Candeia and Paulinho da Viola, too.

Cartola was born at the beginning of the 20th century and raised in a favela of Rio de Janeiro called Mangueira, which was one of the cradles of samba and home to one of the most popular samba schools of Rio, Estação Primeira de Mangueira. His many timeless classics include "As Rosas não Falam" and "O Mundo É um Moinho." Cartola remains a great influence on other samba artists and fans who love his enduring songs.

Big Fan

Caetano Veloso was at Theatro Net Rio where Cristina performed recently. He says of that night, "With Cartola's songs, Teresa's artistry really shows. Her elegance on stage, the simultaneous spontaneity and decorum of every gesture, the humor, the tone, impeccable intonation—all combine in this true creator-singer, a genuine artist."

Veloso also applauded Carlinhos Sete Cordas' performance, saying that he "plays with such a richness—he has all the history of bossa nova and root samba … All Brazilians should see and listen to what happened at Theatro Net Rio that night."

And now Brazilian music fans in New York, Fort Lauderdale and Chicago can. Hope to see you there!
