Thalma was born into a home filled with music and creativity, as the daughter of pianist, arranger, composer and conductor Laercio De Freitas. Access to such a musical upbringing proved to be instrumental in shaping De Frietas’s ear at an early age.
Her own professional career began in musical theatre with the Brazilian production of “Hair” in 1992, directed by Jorge Fernando. Fernando was also pivotal in Thalma’s television career, casting her in her first television show in 1996 entitled Vira Lata, on Rede Globo. In 2000 Thalma became a national star with a brilliant performance as Zilda in ” Laços de Familia “. De Freitas has gone on to perform in 17 Brazilian television shows and becoming one of Rede Globo’s most beloved actresses, especially important at a time with very few visible Black Brazilian Actress’s.
De Freitas performed in tree films: The Xango from Baker Street by Miguel Faria Jr. ” Jardim Beleléu” by Ari Cândido Fernandes and “Filhas do Vento” directed by Joel Zito Araújo, for this last she was awarded the Best Supporting Actress in the Gramado Festival in 2005.

Simultaneously, De Freitas was actively engaged in the Brazilian music scene, with a passion for singing, garnering much respect as an independent artist.
In 2004, she released her only solo album with classic and contemporary songs: “Doce de Côco” (from Jacob’s Mandolin and Herminio Bello de Carvalho ), “Beija-me” ( Roberto Martins and Mario Rossi ) “ Tranquilo” ( of Kassin ), “ O Samba Taí “ ( Seu Jorge ) and “Cordeiro de Nana” (Matthew and Dadinho), which were chosen to compose the soundtrack of the television show, Senhora do Destino . Her father, Laércio de Freitas, participated in the album as a pianist, along with other luminaries of the samba carioca: Wilson das Neves (drums) and Bebeto (bass).
Alongside solo concerts performing traditional and contemporary ‘samba jazz‘ tunes, Thalma colaborates with many diferent artists as João Donato, Caetano Veloso, Céu, Anelis Assumpção, Marcelo D2, Domenico, Gaby Amarantos, Tulipa Ruiz, Instituto, Madlib, Love Trio and Nublu Orquestra conducted by maestro Butch Morris, this last inspiring her to develop the experimental project based in spontaneous sonic creation “Circus Serendipitus” with Iara Rennó, Quincas Moreira, Guilherme Held and Tony Gordin.

Thalma de Freitas is also crooner of carioca bigband Orquestra Imperial. The band recorded two albuns: “ Carnaval só ano que vem” ( 2006 ) and “ Fazendo as Pazes com o Swing “ ( 2012 )
The work has unprecedented repertoire, signed by members of the Orchestra.
In 2006 Orquestra Imperial toured some of the best European festivals as Roskilde (Denmark) and La Mar de la Musica (Cartagena, Spain). In the same year won the Premio APCA (Paulista Association of Art Critics) for Best Group and Best CD category listed MPB TIM Award.

In 2008 they beat the attendance record Virada Cultural Paulista, playing to over 40,000 people in Ave. São João, SP.

In 2009 returned to more great European tour with shows in London, festivals in Portugal and Italy, and, back in Brazil, produced and interpreted a great show: Gainsbourg IMPERIAL with the French maestro Jean-Claude Vannier and former Gainsbourg’s muse Jane Birkin. The show became a TV special produced by TV SESC and competed for prizes at festivals in France. This spectacle has won the Premio Bravo! Best Show of 2009 in Brazil.

Orquestra Imperial performed at Carnegie Hall in dec. 2012 closing the festival “Voices of Latin America”.

In 2012, Thalma de Freitas was also given the tremendous honor of representing Brasil in the Paralympics Closing Cerimony in London, performing with Carlinhos Brown.

De Freitas is currently working on a solo album, to be released in 2013, with iconic LA producer Georgia Anne Muldrow, featuring João Donato and Miguel Atwood Ferguson, creating an incredibly inspired new sound, influenced equally by Brazil and LA.
